Zambia’s Digital Push: SmartCare Pro Revolutionizes Health Services as Smart Boards Empower Rural Education

Zambia’s commitment to digital transformation is rapidly reshaping public services, with a significant milestone achieved in healthcare. The government, through the SMART Zambia Institute, has successfully rolled out its advanced Electronic Health Record (EHR) system, SmartCare Pro, to an impressive 80 percent of health facilities nationwide. This initiative promises to drastically cut patient waiting times and fundamentally enhance service delivery across the health sector, marking a pivotal step towards a more efficient and patient-centric system.
The extensive deployment of SmartCare Pro was announced by Mr. Percy Chinyama, National Coordinator for SMART Zambia, on July 9, 2026, during a recent courtesy call on Senior Chief Ndungu at his palace in Zambezi district, North-Western Province. Mr. Chinyama emphasized the critical importance of digitalization for Zambia to remain competitive and aligned with global technological advancements. He articulated the government’s vision for an “all-inclusive digital economy,” where technology acts as an enabler, particularly for citizens in underserved rural areas. “Our goal as a government is to ensure an all-inclusive digital economy, where technology serves as a bridge rather than a barrier for our people in rural areas,” Mr. Chinyama stated, highlighting the strategic intent behind these initiatives.
Beyond healthcare, SMART Zambia’s digital drive extends to education, directly addressing the long-standing digital divide between urban and rural learners. The Institute has begun distributing ‘Smart Boards’ to schools, prioritizing rural institutions to equip students with essential ICT resources. This move is designed to level the playing field, ensuring that children in remote areas gain access to modern learning tools previously unavailable to them.
The government’s commitment to digital inclusion also encompasses traditional leadership. Mr. Chinyama underscored plans to equip traditional leaders with ICT communication tools, recognizing their vital role in community development and governance. This ensures that no traditional leader or citizen is left behind in Zambia’s ambitious journey towards digital transformation, fostering better communication and easier implementation of development agendas at the local level.
Senior Chief Ndungu warmly applauded the government’s digital programmes, recognizing their profound potential to benefit his chiefdom. He specifically highlighted the positive impact on rural education, stating, “We are happy with this development because our children in rural schools have lacked these essential ICT resources for too long, and this intervention will greatly improve their learning.” The Chief further noted that these initiatives would ease the implementation of various development agendas within his jurisdiction, signaling strong traditional support for the modernization efforts.
Mr. Chinyama was accompanied to the palace by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Mr. Evans Muhanga, and North-Western Province Permanent Secretary, Colonel Grandson Katambi (Rtd), among other government officials.
The comprehensive rollout of SmartCare Pro, coupled with the strategic distribution of Smart Boards and the empowerment of traditional leaders, underscores Zambia’s determined push towards a digitally empowered future. These initiatives collectively aim to enhance service delivery, improve educational outcomes, and ensure that the benefits of technological advancement are accessible to all Zambians, creating a robust and inclusive digital society.
