Reinventing the Nigerian Kitchen: Dolapo Daramola’s Àjàrà Foods Blends Tradition and Convenience at 50

In a nation celebrated for its rich culinary heritage, the art of Nigerian cooking is often synonymous with hours of meticulous preparation. From washing and blending ingredients to grinding and prepping, the journey to a delicious meal can be as exhaustive as it is rewarding. But what if the joy of authentic home cooking could be experienced without the pre-culinary fatigue? This is the core problem Dolapo Daramola, at the age of 50, set out to solve with Àjàrà Foods, a brand rapidly transforming kitchens across Nigeria and beyond.
Dolapo’s entrepreneurial spark was ignited by a common dilemma observed in her own home: her children loved Nigerian food but recoiled from the time-consuming prep work. They, like many modern Nigerians, preferred the convenience of ordering out over the laborious initial steps of cooking. This simple observation led to a profound question: what if the most challenging part of cooking was already handled?
Launched just under a year ago from her home kitchen with a modest offering of three products, Àjàrà Foods has since burgeoned into a sophisticated food processing enterprise. The brand now boasts six carefully crafted Nigerian cooking bases, pepper mixes, chilli dips, and prepared palm oil products. These innovations promise not only faster, easier meal preparation but also consistent, authentic flavours, a testament echoed by Dolapo’s once reluctant children who now readily reach for Àjàrà products.
The company’s growth trajectory has been nothing short of remarkable. In a short span, Àjàrà Foods has secured NAFDAC certification for four of its products – a critical stamp of quality and safety in the Nigerian food industry – and moved into its own dedicated office and production facility. Its all-women production team exemplifies Dolapo’s commitment to empowerment. Beyond local success, Àjàrà Foods has extended its reach, serving customers in the UK and Canada, and cementing its presence on prominent delivery platforms like Chowdeck. Participation in the last two GTCO Food and Drink Festivals underscored the significant demand for its innovative solutions, confirming that Dolapo had tapped into a real, widespread need.
Yet, the journey has been far from “soft,” a term Dolapo humorously reserves for her customers. Building Àjàrà Foods has involved confronting significant challenges. The food processing industry is inherently capital-intensive, with costs for equipment, packaging, electricity, and raw materials mounting quickly. The seasonality of many Nigerian ingredients adds another layer of complexity, leading to unpredictable shifts in pricing and availability. Perhaps the most formidable hurdle has been shifting deeply ingrained consumer habits. For generations, Nigerians have prided themselves on buying fresh from the market and cooking from scratch. Convincing them that Àjàrà products offer not just convenience but superior, consistent quality has required immense patience and strategic effort.
Adding to these operational challenges was Dolapo’s personal learning curve. Embarking on this venture at 50 meant diving headfirst into uncharted territory. She became a student again, mastering everything from food safety and production logistics to digital marketing, social media strategies, finance, and technology. Her team and children find her efforts to learn tools like Canva, CapCut, and ChatGPT endlessly amusing, especially when her daughter, the company’s COO, vetoes her video creations for the brand’s official pages. But beneath the lighthearted banter lies a profound determination – a woman in her prime, relentlessly acquiring new skills because of an unwavering belief in her vision.
Beyond its commercial success, Àjàrà Foods is deeply woven into Dolapo’s personal legacy. The brand name itself, “Àjàrà”—a Yoruba word meaning “fruitful vine”—was a nickname given by her mother years ago, signifying a giver and solution provider. This spirit of nurturing and support is reflected in her products, with the Àbímbólá Jollof Mix named after her son, and the Ata Fessy Chilli Pepper Dip paying tribute to her late father, Professor Festus Akintola. “I wanted to immortalize his name,” she shares, “I wish he was alive to see my dreams come into manifestation.” This sentiment underscores that Àjàrà Foods is more than just a food brand; it is a living family story, a testament to memory, and a quiet declaration that purpose knows no age limit.
Dolapo’s journey offers potent lessons for aspiring entrepreneurs. She emphasizes that true courage isn’t the absence of fear, but the resolve to keep moving forward despite imperfections. Her experience has revealed a deeper well of resilience and adaptability than she previously imagined, teaching her that age and apprehension are poor excuses to constrain one’s potential. Her advice is pragmatic: start with a real problem, test thoroughly, document recipes, prioritize hygiene and consistency, understand costs, build scalable systems, and most importantly, don’t wait for perfection to share your vision.
Looking ahead, Dolapo envisions Àjàrà Foods becoming one of Nigeria’s most trusted convenience food brands within the next three to five years. Her goals include expanded retail distribution, robust export channels to the UK, Canada, and the US, and a more automated production facility. Beyond business metrics, she is committed to building an enterprise that creates sustainable employment, especially for women, serving both individual customers and institutional buyers on a grand scale. The heartfelt message from a customer, praising her “blessed hands” after tasting the Ata Fessy Chilli Pepper Dip, encapsulates the profound satisfaction derived from solving a genuine problem and building something meaningful.
Dolapo Daramola’s story is a compelling narrative of innovation, resilience, and the power of embracing new challenges at any stage of life. It’s a reminder that a simple observation, fueled by passion and persistent effort, can blossom into a thriving enterprise that redefines an entire industry.
