Ghana Launches RoboTechLabs at UMaT to Drive Digital Industrial Transformation

Minister George positions robotics initiative as strategic investment in Africa’s emerging tech hub

Ghana has taken a decisive step toward establishing itself as Africa’s leading digital hub with the launch of the RoboTechLabs Project at the University of Mines and Technology in Tarkwa. Communications Minister Hon. Samuel Nartey George described the initiative as a strategic investment in Ghana’s technological future, designed to position the country within the emerging global digital industrial order.

Strategic partnership drives cutting-edge robotics education

The RoboTechLabs Project represents a collaborative effort between develoPPP/ibes AG and UMaT, with backing from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit. The initiative aims to improve employability and enhance youth participation in robotics and automation fields, supporting Ghana’s broader digital innovation and industrial transformation agenda.

During the Tuesday, March 10, 2026 launch ceremony, Minister George expressed appreciation to development partners for their continued investment in Ghana’s technological ecosystem and commitment to nurturing the country’s next generation of innovators.

Beyond infrastructure: Human capital as transformation engine

The Minister emphasized that the laboratory launch represents far more than inaugurating a physical facility. “It represents a deliberate step towards equipping Ghana with the capabilities required to design, deploy and govern emerging technologies,” he explained, highlighting the strategic importance of technological sovereignty in the modern economy.

George stressed that nations successfully integrating robotics and automation into their education and industrial systems will gain significant competitive advantages in the evolving global economy. This positioning reflects Ghana’s ambition to move beyond technology consumption toward active technological innovation and leadership.

Three-pillar digital transformation strategy

The Minister outlined Ghana’s comprehensive digital transformation agenda, anchored on three strategic pillars: expanding resilient and inclusive digital infrastructure, accelerating digital skills development across all societal levels, and strengthening innovation ecosystems to support high-value technology industries.

“RoboTechLabs speaks directly to the second and third pillars. Ghana has made clear its ambition to become a leading digital hub in Africa. However, infrastructure and policies alone are not enough. The true engine of digital transformation is human capital,” George emphasized.

Bridging academic instruction and industry application

The RoboTechLabs initiative directly contributes to Ghana’s digital skills development and innovation goals by addressing the critical gap between academic instruction and industry application. The facility will provide students and professionals with practical exposure to robotics, automation systems, embedded engineering, and industrial control technologies — skills essential for Ghana’s industrial modernization efforts.

This hands-on approach ensures graduates possess immediately applicable skills that align with industry demands, particularly in Ghana’s key economic sectors including mining, manufacturing, agriculture, logistics, and energy.

Complementary national digital initiatives

Minister George highlighted ongoing government programmes aimed at equipping young Ghanaians with future-ready skills. These include the National Digital Skills Programme and the One Million Coders Programme, which focus on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data analytics, and software engineering capabilities.

The government is working through key institutions including the National Information Technology Agency, the Cyber Security Authority, and Ghana Digital Centres Limited to create secure, innovation-ready environments supporting technological growth and entrepreneurship.

Strategic positioning for industrial sectors

The Minister stressed that robotics and automation are becoming increasingly important across Ghana’s key economic sectors. He noted that institutions such as UMaT are uniquely positioned to drive applied technological innovation, particularly in industrial and extractive sectors that remain central to Ghana’s economic development strategy.

This sectoral focus ensures that technological advancement directly supports existing economic strengths while building new capabilities for future growth opportunities.

Collaborative ecosystem essential for success

Minister George underscored the importance of collaboration among academia, development partners, and the private sector in building sustainable innovation ecosystems. He noted that such partnerships ensure education, policy, and industry demands remain aligned to support technological advancement and economic growth.

The government continues strengthening the broader enabling environment for digital innovation through regulatory and policy reforms, cybersecurity reinforcement, and digital infrastructure expansion across the country.

German partnership demonstrates international confidence

GIZ’s develoPPP Programme Project Manager Ms. Resal Saberi emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships in advancing robotics, automation, and digital skills development in Ghana. She described the initiative as a collaborative effort that demonstrates how public and private sector actors can work together to create solutions benefiting businesses, local institutions, and sustainable development.

Saberi noted that the RoboTechLab will provide a state-of-the-art environment for students and professionals to gain hands-on experience in robotics and automation while strengthening collaboration between academia and industry.

The facility is expected to equip young professionals with practical skills needed to respond to rapidly evolving technologies shaping critical sectors across Ghana’s economy.
