Morocco’s ‘Marhaba 2026’ Greets Over 2.7 Million Diaspora Amid Evolving Travel Patterns

Morocco’s annual “Marhaba” operation, a vital initiative to welcome its global diaspora, has successfully facilitated the entry of over 2.7 million Moroccan expatriates by early August 2026. This significant influx, managed under the banner of “Marhaba 2026” by the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity, reflects the enduring connection between Moroccans living abroad and their homeland, even as travel trends show notable shifts.

As reported by Omar Moussa Abdellah, project manager and supervisor of the “Marhaba” operation, a total of 2,741,570 expatriates had entered Moroccan territory by August 3rd. This figure marks a modest but steady increase of 0.45% compared to the same period in the previous year, highlighting the operation’s continued efficiency in handling large-scale seasonal migration. Moussa Abdellah shared these insights during an appearance on the “Obour” program broadcast on Radio Tanger-Med.

While overall arrivals saw a slight uptick, the number of vehicles entering the country experienced a noticeable decline. Up to August 3rd, 287,518 vehicles had entered, a decrease of 12.43% compared to the same date in 2025. This trend, according to Moussa Abdellah, is largely attributed to a growing preference for carpooling among expatriates, likely driven by the rising costs associated with individual car travel. This adaptation by travelers underscores an evolving economic landscape impacting cross-border journeys.

Sea routes continue to be the primary gateway for the diaspora, accounting for 1,430,811 arrivals by August 3rd, representing 52.19% of total entries. The Tanger Med port solidified its crucial role, processing 512,693 travelers alone, which is 35.89% of all sea arrivals. Other significant maritime entry points include the port of Nador, welcoming 200,013 travelers, and Tanger Ville, with 168,240 passengers. The efficiency of these port operations is paramount to the smooth flow of the Marhaba initiative.

Air travel also contributed significantly to the homecoming, with a total of 1,310,759 expatriates arriving by plane. Casablanca’s Mohammed V International Airport led the aerial entries, facilitating the arrival of 333,490 travelers, accounting for 25.44% of all air arrivals. Other key airports included Marrakech-Menara (225,086 travelers), Tanger-Ibn Battouta (167,147), and the airports of Nador (119,487) and Rabat-Salé (119,452), collectively demonstrating the widespread reach of Morocco’s air infrastructure.
