Egypt Deepens African Engagement: Historic El-Alamein Summit Unlocks New Avenues with Madagascar

In a significant demonstration of Egypt’s commitment to bolstering its continental ties, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi hosted his Malagasy counterpart, President Michael Randrianirina, today in the coastal city of El-Alamein. This landmark meeting marks the first official bilateral visit by a Malagasy President to Egypt, heralding a new chapter in diplomatic and economic cooperation between the two African nations.

The reception commenced with full honors, including a guard of honour and the playing of national anthems, culminating in a commemorative photograph before delegations from both countries proceeded to an expanded session of talks. The day’s agenda also saw the signing of several agreements and memoranda of understanding, underscoring concrete steps towards future collaboration. President El-Sisi later hosted a luncheon banquet in honour of President Randrianirina and his delegation, followed by a joint press conference.

Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy, Spokesman for the Egyptian Presidency, confirmed that discussions centered on a shared vision to significantly strengthen bilateral relations across a diverse array of fields. Economic cooperation, trade, and investment emerged as pivotal areas, reflecting Egypt’s broader strategy to foster intra-African commerce and development. Beyond these, both leaders emphasized advancing collaboration in promising sectors crucial for Madagascar’s development, including agriculture, health, transport and infrastructure, renewable energy, and water resources. A key focus was also placed on capacity-building initiatives for Malagasy cadres, a testament to Egypt’s long-standing support through programs like those offered by the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development (EAPD).

President Randrianirina expressed profound pride and gratitude for the warm hospitality extended by Egypt, characterizing the visit as truly historic. He particularly acknowledged Egypt’s timely support following recent cyclones that impacted Madagascar, and lauded the EAPD’s continuous efforts in providing vital training programs to various Malagasy professionals. This assistance highlights Egypt’s active role in African solidarity and humanitarian support.

Beyond bilateral interests, the leaders also explored avenues for enhanced cooperation within the broader African context, especially under the framework of the African Union. This aligns with Egypt’s foreign policy priorities to strengthen African solidarity, promote regional integration, and collectively address continental challenges. The summit in El-Alamein thus serves as a powerful symbol of South-South cooperation, aiming for mutual prosperity and reinforcing the bonds between North and East African nations.
