The Gambia Targets Global Investment at Paris Energy Forum

Frontier Exploration in the MSGBC Basin
Cany Jobe, Director General of the Gambia Petroleum Commission, is representing the nation at the Invest in African Energy (IAE) Forum 2026 in Paris. The Gambia is positioning itself as one of the most promising frontier exploration markets within the MSGBC Basin (Mauritania-Senegal-Gambia-Bissau-Conakry)—a region that has become a global hotspot following major discoveries in neighboring Senegal and Mauritania.
As a “first-mover” opportunity, The Gambia offers investors access to underexplored acreage along the same geological trend as established producing fields.
De-Risking the Upstream Sector
A central theme of Jobe’s mission in Paris is the “de-risking” of frontier acreage. To move from geological potential to commercial reality, The Gambia has implemented several strategic pillars:
- Regulatory Oversight: In early 2026, the government launched a new petroleum testing laboratory. This facility enhances operational standards and ensures that the state can independently verify resource quality and environmental compliance.
- New Licensing Momentum: Following a strategic review of open acreage, the government confirmed in March 2026 that new exploration licenses have been awarded to three international companies.
- Open Blocks: The re-promotion of blocks A2 and A5 is attracting significant interest due to substantial unrisked prospective resource estimates.
Strategic Assets: Blocks A1 and A4
The Gambia’s most high-profile assets, Offshore Blocks A1 and A4, are increasingly viewed as low-hanging fruit for major operators:
- Geological Continuity: These blocks sit on the same trend as Senegal’s producing fields, significantly reducing exploration risk.
- Cost Efficiency: Proximity to existing regional infrastructure allows for potential subsea tiebacks and shared services, which could drastically reduce the time and capital required from discovery to first oil.
- Data Availability: Extensive 2D and 3D seismic data are already available for these blocks, providing a clear “bankable” picture for incoming investors.
The West African Advantage
As global energy markets prioritize supply diversification and long-term reserve growth, West Africa’s role is expanding. The Gambia’s pitch in Paris emphasizes that its investment case is strengthened by its membership in the broader MSGBC ecosystem. By aligning its regulatory framework with its neighbors and offering fresh, data-rich acreage, The Gambia is successfully transitioning from a region of “high potential” to a concrete investment proposition for 2026 and beyond.
