The 2026 Africa Development Impact Forum (ADIF) in Addis Ababa: Toward Concrete Solutions for Job Creation in Africa
On June 11 and 12, 2026, the UN Economic Commission for Africa held the first edition of the Africa Development Impact Forum at the UN Conference Center in Addis Ababa. Held under the theme “Best Practices and Innovative Solutions for Job Creation in Africa,” the event marked a shift in approach: moving from dialogue to concrete action on the continent’s most pressing employment challenge.
Background: An Urgent Need for 15 Million Jobs a Year
Africa faces exceptional demographic pressure. To absorb new entrants into the labor market, the continent needs to create more than 15 million jobs every year. In response to this structural challenge, ADIF was designed as a high-level platform to turn knowledge, research, and best practices into scalable, measurable action.
ADIF’s Core Objectives
The forum set out to identify and promote best practices and innovative solutions for job creation, foster exchange among policymakers, private sector players, researchers, and development partners, co-design concrete initiatives and speed up their rollout, and strengthen regional collaboration and the sharing of experience among African countries.
Highlights and Themes
Over the two days, several thematic sessions took place, covering high-growth youth entrepreneurship, creative industries and job creation, youth-centered green mineral value chains—moving from extraction to processing—and innovation and best practices for sustainable employment. The event underscored the central role of African youth and the importance of inclusive industrialization, the green economy, and the digital economy in generating quality jobs.
A Results-Oriented Platform
Unlike many international forums, ADIF was designed to be pragmatic. The goal was less about producing final declarations than about building coalitions of actors ready to act. The Economic Commission for Africa envisions the forum as a recurring mechanism to track progress and adjust strategies in real time.
Expected Impact and Outlook
The successful staging of this first edition in Addis Ababa reinforces Ethiopia’s and the Commission’s standing as central players in shaping the conversation on African development. Anticipated outcomes include new public-private initiatives for youth employment, better sharing of models that are already working in certain countries, and increased mobilization of financing for projects with strong social and economic impact.
ADIF 2026 lays the groundwork for a more operational approach to Africa’s employment challenges, industrialization, and structural transformation.
