South Africa to Host National Disaster Management Strategic Indaba

Bolstering Resilience Against Climate and Human-Induced Disasters

In a proactive move to safeguard the nation, the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Mr. Velenkosini Hlabisa, will convene the National Disaster Management Strategic Indaba on April 14, 2026. Set to take place at Emperors Palace in Gauteng, the summit comes at a critical time as South Africa faces increasing vulnerability to floods, droughts, and other climate-related emergencies.

The Indaba is themed “Strengthening Disaster Management Functions across the Country,” focusing on a comprehensive cycle of prevention, preparation, response, and recovery.

A Multi-Sectoral Approach to National Safety

Recognizing that disaster response requires more than just government intervention, the summit will bring together a diverse array of stakeholders. Executive leaders, disaster management experts, academics, and representatives from the private sector and civil society will collaborate to refine the national response strategy.

The primary goals of these engagements include:

  • Improving Early Warning Systems: Ensuring communities have the information needed to act before disaster strikes.
  • Building Resilient Infrastructure: Strengthening the physical foundations of municipalities to withstand extreme weather.
  • Enhancing Governance: Focusing on institutional capacity, coordination, and accountability across national, provincial, and local government levels.

Key Pillars of the 2026 Strategy

Stakeholders will dive into several critical areas during the session, including the performance of disaster grants and support programs specifically designed for municipalities. With the hashtag #EveryMunicipalityMustWork, the government is emphasizing that local-level readiness is the first line of defense in any national crisis.

The discussions are expected to produce tangible outcomes, most notably a national roadmap for sustainable disaster management and shared accountability frameworks that bind different sectors to specific response commitments.
