Seychelles and Moldova Formalize Diplomatic Ties at the United Nations
The Republic of Seychelles and the Republic of Moldova have officially established diplomatic relations, aimed at fostering a framework for bilateral cooperation and strengthening international friendship. The landmark accord was finalized by top diplomats at the United Nations, opening a new chapter of engagement between the East African island nation and the Eastern European republic.
A Foundation of Shared International Values
The formal establishment of ties is rooted in the core principles of the Charter of the United Nations and mutual respect for the fundamental norms of international law. Despite their geographical distance, both countries share key common ground in the multilateral sphere. Seychelles and Moldova are both active members of two prominent global coalitions:
- The Forum of Small States (FOSS): A non-formal group of nations at the UN working together to amplify the voice of smaller economies on global issues like climate change and sustainable development.
- The Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF): A global community uniting French-speaking nations, emphasizing shared cultural heritage, peace, and democratic governance.
The joint alignment within these organizations provides an immediate, ready-made pipeline for both states to collaborate on environmental resilience, trade diversification, and multilateral diplomatic initiatives.
Official Signing in New York
The historic agreement was sealed through the signing of an official Protocol at the United Nations headquarters in New York City. The documents were signed by Ambassador Vivianne Fock Tave, the Permanent Representative of Seychelles to the United Nations, and Ambassador Gheorghe Leucă, the Permanent Representative of Moldova to the United Nations.
During the bilateral signing session, both ambassadors expressed strong enthusiasm for the future of the partnership, noting that formalizing ties allows both capitals to actively explore economic exchanges, cultural sharing, and cooperative voting blocks at the UN General Assembly. The step reflects Seychelles’ continuous commitment to an inclusive, non-aligned foreign policy that builds bridges across diverse global regions.
