Nigeria: FG Reaffirms Commitment to Partner with Groundnut Farmers Association to Boost Agricultural Productivity

The Federal Government of Nigeria has reiterated its readiness to collaborate with the Afrigroundnut Farmers Association of Nigeria (AGFAN) and other agricultural groups to enhance productivity, create jobs, and drive sustainable economic growth across the nation.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, CON, made this known on Monday, 31st March, 2026, in Abuja, when he received a delegation from AGFAN led by its President, Malam Abdullahi Muhammad Isa. Sen. Akume was represented at the occasion by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office (GSO), Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, mni.

Speaking at the meeting, Dr. Kana highlighted the strategic importance of groundnut production to Nigeria’s economic history and future growth, stressing that groundnut is not merely a staple food but a critical driver of national economic development. Citing historical precedents, he recalled how the iconic groundnut pyramids of Northern Nigeria made a significant contribution to the country’s GDP during the 1940s and 1950s, and played a pivotal role in financing early oil exploration efforts in the country.

The SGF also expressed appreciation to AGFAN for its support of the Tinubu-led administration and called on the Association to mobilise its membership across all 36 states of the federation. He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting the Association and the broader agricultural sector in advancing food security and driving the nation’s economic development.

In his remarks, AGFAN President Malam Abdullahi Muhammad Isa assured the Federal Government of the Association’s readiness to operate within a sustainable framework, noting that any support received — whether in the form of inputs such as seedlings and fertilisers, or equipment — would be repaid through increased productivity, economic returns, and tangible contributions to national development.

Malam Isa further emphasised that mechanisation remains a critical factor in achieving large-scale agricultural productivity, improving farmers’ access to modern tools, and positioning Nigeria to compete globally through increased exports and foreign exchange earnings.

“We have collectively taken a position to support the APC as the platform that reflects our aspirations and offers the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s development. Our members are fully mobilised and committed to this course,” he stated.
