South Africa: Government Launches Initiative To Revive And Rebuild Basketball

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) has launched a nationwide effort to rebuild and stabilise basketball governance in South Africa. This follows the de-recognition of Basketball South Africa due to longstanding administrative and governance challenges that hindered the growth of the sport.
The intervention is being implemented in collaboration with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), through FIBA Africa, and the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC). The goal is to establish a properly governed national basketball federation that safeguards athletes, restores trust in leadership, and secures the sport’s long-term future in the country.
“Basketball is more than a game — it is a global sport and a way of life that connects communities and generations,” said Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, on Wednesday. “In South Africa, it is embraced by people of all ages and offers great potential for youth development, social cohesion, and international participation.”
The Department highlighted basketball’s accessibility, noting that it requires relatively modest infrastructure at the community level yet provides clear pathways to elite and international competition. The expanding popularity of street basketball and the 3×3 format has further promoted inclusivity, partnership opportunities, and innovation within the sport.
However, Minister McKenzie expressed concern that persistent governance failures have severely undermined progress and credibility. “Basketball holds immense potential for South Africa, particularly for young people. We could not allow ongoing leadership weaknesses to threaten its future. Our duty is to the athletes, the development pipeline, and the broader interests of South African basketball,” he stated.
Under the recovery plan, FIBA Africa, DSAC, and SASCOC have been tasked with leading a structured rebuilding process that includes:
-
Creating a comprehensive roadmap for the revival and sustainable development of basketball in South Africa.
-
Implementing specific measures leading to the establishment of a new, representative national basketball federation, culminating in the election of a credible executive leadership.
To guide implementation, FIBA Africa has appointed a board member as its official representative to work closely with DSAC and SASCOC, ensuring oversight and adherence to international standards of governance and integrity.
“This process is about restoring transparency, accountability, and strong governance,” Minister McKenzie added. “Alongside FIBA and SASCOC, we are committed to rebuilding basketball so that it serves players, administrators, and supporters — and positions South Africa as a leading competitor both across Africa and globally.”
The Department and SASCOC will provide regular public updates on progress toward restoring basketball’s rightful place within South African sport and ensuring sustained excellence at both continental and international levels.
