Ghana: GoldBod Funds Life-Saving Surgeries for Two Children at Korle Bu

A Timely Intervention for Vulnerable Families
In a significant act of corporate social responsibility, the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has donated GHS 81,940 to facilitate urgent, life-saving surgeries for two children at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. The donation was made through GoldBod’s Special Intervention Programme, an initiative designed to provide a safety net for individuals in critical need.
The financial support covered the total surgical costs for Judith Wosemeh and Jewel Awadzi, offering their families much-needed relief during a period of intense medical and financial uncertainty.
Breakdown of the Support
The total donation was allocated based on the specific medical requirements of the two beneficiaries:
- Judith Wosemeh: Received GHS 74,002 for her specialized procedure.
- Jewel Awadzi: Received GHS 7,938 to support her surgical treatment.
Mrs. Gloria Precious Ankomah, Head of the Special Intervention Programme, presented the funds on behalf of GoldBod, emphasizing the institution’s commitment to the well-being of the Ghanaian people.
Strengthening the Healthcare System
The donation was received by Dr. Patrick Bankah, Head of the Department of Surgery at Korle Bu. Dr. Bankah lauded the intervention, noting that such partnerships are vital for the hospital’s mission. By removing the financial barriers to entry, GoldBod allows medical teams to focus entirely on clinical delivery and patient recovery rather than administrative delays.
“This support comes at a crucial time,” Dr. Bankah stated, expressing his appreciation for the relief provided to the families and the medical department.
GoldBod’s Vision: Beyond the Gold Sector
While GoldBod is a central pillar of Ghana’s economic and mining sector, this intervention highlights its growing role in national social development. The institution has increasingly moved to support critical sectors beyond its core mandate, specifically:
- Healthcare Access: Providing funding for those unable to afford essential treatments.
- Education: Supporting initiatives that empower vulnerable youth.
- National Development: Demonstrating that state institutions can be proactive agents of social change.
Through targeted initiatives like the Special Intervention Programme, GoldBod is building a legacy of social responsibility that parallels its contributions to Ghana’s economic transformation. For the families of Judith and Jewel, the donation represents more than just financial aid—it is a second chance at life and a “renewed hope for recovery.”
