Egypt Targets 2,500 MW of Renewable Energy in 2026 to Bolster National Grid

Strategic Energy Meeting in Cairo

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi convened a high-level meeting with Prime Minister Dr. Moustafa Madbouly, the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, and the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources to review Egypt’s 2030 energy strategy. The discussions centered on accelerating the transition to green energy and ensuring the stability of the national electricity grid amidst rising demand.

Accelerating the Renewable Transition

A key takeaway from the meeting was the announcement that 2026 will be a milestone year for Egypt’s green energy goals:

• Capacity Boost: Egypt will add 2,500 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy to the unified national grid by the end of 2026.
• Target 2030: The government is on track to ensure that renewable sources (wind, solar, and battery storage) meet at least 42% of the country’s energy needs by 2030.
• Grid Stability: New battery storage systems and targeted wind/solar capacities are being integrated to enhance grid resilience and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Financial and Operational Milestones in Petroleum

Minister of Petroleum Engineer Karim Badawi provided updates on the fiscal and developmental health of the hydrocarbon sector:

• Arrears Settlement: Per President El-Sisi’s directives, the state is committed to paying all arrears to international operating companies before the end of June 2026.
• Exploration 2026: A comprehensive drilling and development plan is set for 2026 to unlock new oil and gas reserves.
• Resource Management: Efforts are intensifying to rationalize the consumption of natural gas and petroleum products, redirecting savings toward industrial efficiency.

Regional Hub Ambitions

President El-Sisi emphasized that Egypt’s expansion into green energy is not just a domestic necessity but a strategic move to become a leading regional hub for green energy. He directed the Ministries of Electricity, Petroleum, and Finance to integrate their efforts to:

1. Secure Funding: Accelerate the introduction of clean energy capacities through robust financial structures.
2. Mitigate Regional Risks: Address the repercussions of regional developments by securing a steady and diversified electricity supply.
3. Summer Readiness: Implement a rigorous “summer action plan” to manage increased consumption and peak loads effectively.

Industrial Efficiency

Beyond generation, the President reviewed measures to improve energy efficiency within the industrial sector. By optimizing how factories consume power, Egypt aims to ensure that its development requirements are met without straining the national grid, reinforcing the state’s commitment to sustainable economic growth.
