Angolan Artist Márcia Dias Shines in Japan, Securing Gold Medal and International Career Tribute

Tokyo, July 6, 2026 – Angolan visual artist Márcia Dias has garnered international acclaim, securing both the Gold Medal and the International Career Tribute Award Trophy at the International Contemporary Art Exhibition, Arte Brasil 2026. The prestigious event took place from July 1–5 at the Kariya Cultural Center Iris in Kariya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan.

The exhibition fostered a vibrant atmosphere of cultural exchange, creativity, and appreciation for the visual arts, featuring diverse artists, engaging exhibitions, and meetings among artists, curators, and experts, alongside impressive live technical demonstrations.

Márcia Dias captivated the jury with a remarkable live creation, completed under evaluation in just 15 minutes—strictly adhering to the organizers’ stringent time limit. Her painting depicted the quintessential African savanna, the radiant African sun, and the iconic baobab (imbondeiro), a potent symbol of Angolan culture and African ancestry. This ‘Tree of Life’ composition brilliantly showcased her creativity, exceptional technical mastery, rapid execution, and profound artistic sensitivity, earning her the competition’s top honor.

Beyond the Gold Medal, Dias was also presented with the International Career Tribute Award Trophy. This special honor acknowledged her distinguished artistic career and her significant contributions to promoting Angolan art on prestigious international stages over many years.

This latest triumph further solidifies a career already rich with international accolades. In 2019, Márcia Dias was awarded the Gold Medal at the World Trade Center in Dubai for her evocative work, Mumuíla. She received further distinction in 2023, earning another Gold Medal at the 64th edition of the Salon Premier in the United Kingdom for her realistic portrait of Angolan writer Óscar Ribas. Notably, that occasion also marked a special recognition for her two-decade-long artistic career.

During her visit to Japan, Márcia Dias was warmly received by Teodolinda Rosa Rodrigues Coelho, the Ambassador of the Republic of Angola to Japan. Ambassador Coelho extended her congratulations to the artist for this significant recognition and emphasized the vital role of Dias’s work in promoting Angolan culture globally.

The awards received in Kariya represent yet another significant milestone in Márcia Dias’s distinguished career, further affirming the rising global recognition of Angolan contemporary art.
