AFCON 2025: Africa’s Greatest Tournament Kicks Off Today
The stage is set. The preparations are complete. Today, December 21, 2025, marks the beginning of one of the most exciting sporting events on the African continent—the Africa Cup of Nations is finally here, and Morocco is ready to welcome the world.

A Historic Moment for African Football
The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations is the 35th edition of a tournament that has captivated millions of fans across the continent for decades. Running from today through January 18, 2026, this AFCON will make history as the first edition to be played over the Christmas and New Year period. It’s a momentous occasion, bringing African football to the forefront of global attention during one of the most festive times of the year.
Morocco, the proud host nation, will showcase Africa’s football passion across six cities and nine state-of-the-art stadiums. The kingdom views this tournament as a dress rehearsal for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which it will co-host, and has invested heavily in infrastructure to put on a spectacle worthy of the continent’s biggest teams.
The Opening Ceremony and First Match
Today’s opening ceremony promises to be a celebration of Moroccan culture and African football heritage, setting the tone for an unforgettable month of action. The opening match kicks off at 5:30 PM GMT, with hosts Morocco taking on Comoros in Rabat’s Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
Morocco will be determined to make a strong start. When the country last hosted AFCON in 1988, they faltered in their opening match and never reached the final. This time around, with home advantage, passionate support, and modern facilities, the Atlas Lions will be hungry to prove they belong among the continent’s elite.
24 Teams, One Dream
Twenty-four nations will compete in six groups of four teams each. The tournament format has been in place since 2019, expanding from 16 teams to provide more African nations with the opportunity to compete at the highest level. The top two teams from each group, along with the four best third-placed teams, will advance to the knockout stages.
From defending champion Ivory Coast to powerhouses like Nigeria, Egypt, Senegal, and Cameroon, some of Africa’s most talented players will be on display. Whether it’s Mohamed Salah’s brilliance for Egypt, Nigeria’s attacking prowess, or the consistency of the Ivory Coast’s reigning champions, fans are in for a treat.
What Makes This AFCON Special
This tournament carries extra significance for several reasons. The prize money for winning has been increased to $10 million—a substantial boost from the $7 million awarded in 2023. The expansion of venues and stadiums represents a significant investment in African sporting infrastructure, with the world watching as Morocco demonstrates its capability to host major tournaments.
Additionally, with some of Europe’s top players missing their club teams to represent their nations, Premier League clubs and other European sides will feel the impact. The sacrifice these players make speaks to the enormous pride and prestige of the Africa Cup of Nations.
The Journey Ahead
Over the next month, we’ll witness incredible displays of skill, passion, and determination. We’ll see underdogs defy expectations, stars rise to the occasion under pressure, and national pride inspire performances that will live long in memory. The group stages will unfold with drama and excitement, leading to a knockout phase that promises edge-of-your-seat football.
A Celebration of African Football
Ultimately, AFCON 2025 is more than just a tournament—it’s a celebration of African football’s passion, talent, and unity. It brings together nations, rivalries, and a continent united by love for the beautiful game. For the next 29 days, Morocco will be the beating heart of African football.
So settle in, because Africa’s greatest sporting spectacle has begun. The opening match is about to kick off, and anything is possible.
Welcome to AFCON 2025.
