Wood’s Cycad: The Haunting Story of the “Loneliest Plant” on Earth

In the world of botany, there is a plant that holds a tragic and unique title: it is officially the rarest plant on Earth. Every single living specimen of this species is genetically identical. There are no females. It cannot reproduce on its own. It is, for all intents and purposes, a living ghost.
Meet Wood’s Cycad (Encephalartos woodii), a prehistoric-looking plant that has been “Extinct in the Wild” for over a century. Its story is a poignant reminder of the fragility of nature and the lengths to which we must go to preserve the irreplaceable.

Origin and Distribution: Originally native to a single, tiny location: the oNgoye Forest in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Today, it exists only in botanical gardens, conservatories, and a few highly secured private collections around the world. It is completely extinct in its natural habitat.
Habitat: Historically, it grew on the steep, shaded margins of subtropical coastal forests, thriving in the dappled light of forest ravines with rich, well-draining, humus-filled soil and high humidity.
Physical Description: Wood’s Cycad is a striking, robust plant. It features a stout, unbranched, columnar trunk that can grow up to 4–5 meters (13–16 feet) tall over many decades, though most cultivated specimens are much shorter. The crown is topped with a magnificent rosette of long, stiff, glossy dark-green fronds (leaves) that can reach 1.5 to 2 meters in length. The leaflets are sharply pointed. Mature plants produce large, striking, pineapple-like yellow cones. However, because all known plants are male, these cones only produce pollen, never seeds.
History and Cultural Significance: The story of this plant begins in 1895, when a botanist named John Medley Wood discovered a single cluster of these cycads growing on a steep slope in the oNgoye Forest. Recognizing its uniqueness, he sent a portion of the plant to the KwaZulu-Natal Herbarium.
Despite extensive searches by botanists over the following decades, not a single other plant, and crucially, no female plant, was ever found. In 1907, in a controversial move meant to “protect” it from poachers, the original wild stump and its suckers were removed from the forest and sent to the Pretoria Botanic Gardens. That act marked the final, official extinction of the species in the wild. Every Wood’s Cycad alive today is a vegetative clone (a sucker or offshoot) of that single, original 1895 discovery.
Behavior and Lifestyle: Cycads are ancient plants, often called “living fossils” because they have existed largely unchanged since the time of the dinosaurs (over 200 million years ago). They are famously slow-growing; a Wood’s Cycad might only add a few centimeters to its trunk height per year.
Like all cycads, Encephalartos woodii is dioecious, meaning individual plants are either strictly male or strictly female. In nature, specific weevils would pollinate the female cones, leading to the production of bright red, fleshy seeds. Because no female E. woodii has ever been documented, natural sexual reproduction is impossible. The species survives solely through vegetative propagation: the male trunk occasionally produces basal suckers (pups), which are carefully removed, rooted, and grown into new, genetically identical clones.
Conservation Status and Threats: Wood’s Cycad is classified as Extinct in the Wild (EW) by the IUCN Red List. In cultivation, it is heavily protected under CITES Appendix I, which strictly prohibits any commercial international trade.
The historical threats were habitat destruction (logging of the oNgoye Forest) and over-collection by Victorian-era plant enthusiasts. Today, the “threat” is genetic stagnation. Because the entire global population is a single clone, a single novel pathogen, fungus, or pest adapted to attack this specific genetic makeup could theoretically wipe out the entire species in a matter of months.
