SIAM 2026: Meknes Exhibition Drives African Food Sovereignty

The 18th edition of the International Agricultural Show in Morocco (SIAM 2026) concluded with record-breaking success in Meknes, cementing its status as the premier agricultural platform in Africa. Convening under the high patronage of King Mohammed VI, the expanded nine-day event attracted over 1.13 million visitors and brought global agricultural innovation directly to the continent.

Centralizing Sustainable Livestock and Animal Production

This year’s exhibition focused intensely on a critical theme: “Sustainability of Animal Production and Food Sovereignty.” Spanning a massive 37-hectare venue, the event directly addressed the intersection of livestock viability, worsening climate conditions, and the urgent continental push to reduce reliance on food imports.

With 1,590 exhibitors representing 76 countries, the livestock and animal production pavilions took center stage. Breed associations and international experts showcased genetic breakthroughs, advanced veterinary solutions, and precision feeding systems designed to optimize yields for cattle, poultry, and small ruminants under severe water stress.

Deepening International Ties and Innovation

Portugal was featured as the 2026 Guest of Honor, highlighting strong agricultural and technological cooperation ties with Morocco. The partnership catalyzed deep discussions on digital transformation, climate adaptation, and resource management.

A major highlight of the fair was the specialized focus on rural digitalization and smart water management. In response to recurring regional water shortages, exhibitors showcased cutting-edge drip irrigation technologies, solar-powered agricultural components, and precision controllers designed to maximize crop resilience.

Boosting Local Wealth and Cooperatives

SIAM 2026 placed a massive emphasis on grassroots economic empowerment, hosting 538 local agricultural cooperatives. The Agricultural Development Agency (ADA) led a major initiative supporting nearly 456 terroir product producer groups, showcasing premium local products like argan oil, saffron, and regional honey.

The event also hosted official ceremonies awarding geographical indication and origin designation certificates. These distinct quality markers are designed to protect Morocco’s rich agricultural heritage while boosting the global market competitiveness of smallholder farmers and women-led cooperatives.
