UK Investors See Mauritius as Key African Gateway, Urge Clearer Communication for Growth

A new report by Invest Africa reveals a robust and enduring confidence among UK investors in Mauritius, reaffirming the island nation’s strategic appeal as a gateway to the African continent. While trust in Mauritius’s economic fundamentals and governance remains high, the study, funded by the UK Government through UK International Development, pinpoints a clear opportunity: refining how investment opportunities are presented to convert this strong sentiment into tangible capital flow, particularly in burgeoning sectors.
The “UK–Mauritius Investor Sentiment Report 2026,” drawing on comprehensive surveys and interviews, paints a detailed picture of investor perception. A striking 81% of UK investors view Mauritius as an attractive entry point to Africa. This positive outlook extends to its economic resilience, with 60% expressing optimism for Mauritius’s economic trajectory in 2026, rising to 67% over a three-to-five-year horizon, underscoring belief in its long-term competitiveness. The government’s engagement with investors also earned high marks, with 68% rating it positively.
This sustained trust is not accidental. Mauritius has cultivated a reputation for political stability, strong governance, and a robust legal framework – foundational elements that consistently attract international capital. “UK investors are not asking whether Mauritius is a credible destination; they have already decided that it is,” notes Chantelé Carrington, CEO of Invest Africa. This established credibility positions Mauritius uniquely, allowing it to focus on operational improvements rather than fundamental perception challenges.
The report identifies that the primary hurdle to deeper engagement is informational, not perceptual. Investors, while confident in Mauritius’s overall proposition, desire more accessible, structured, and unambiguous details about specific opportunities. Carrington aptly describes this as a “solvable problem,” offering Mauritius a “precise map of where to focus next” to translate investor interest into actual projects. Mr. Sachin Mohabeer, Deputy CEO of the Economic Development Board of Mauritius (EDB), welcomed this “direct, unfiltered feedback,” seeing it as a clear signal for the EDB to sharpen its communication strategy, especially across priority sectors.
Beyond traditional investment areas, the report highlights growing interest in Mauritius’s emerging sectors, signaling a diversification of its economic landscape. Fintech and digital infrastructure garnered a 67% positive sentiment, followed by the blue economy at 62%, and general infrastructure at 55%. These figures suggest that the next wave of investment will likely target high-growth, future-oriented industries crucial for sustainable development and economic transformation.
The findings underscore the strategic importance of the UK-Mauritius relationship. H.E Paul Brummell CMG, British High Commissioner to Mauritius, lauded the report for illuminating Mauritius’s strengths – its political stability, governance, and its compelling “Gateway to Africa” positioning. He highlighted the recently signed Enhanced Strategic Trade Partnership as a critical framework to convert this confidence into tangible investment, fostering growth and creating jobs in both nations. This partnership, coupled with the insights from Invest Africa’s report, provides a clear roadmap for Mauritius to leverage its inherent strengths and actively target the right investments.
In sum, the Invest Africa report serves as both a validation and a strategic guide for Mauritius. It confirms the island’s strong appeal to UK investors, built on a foundation of trust and good governance. The challenge now lies in effectively articulating specific investment avenues, particularly within its rapidly developing high-potential sectors. By doing so, Mauritius can further solidify its role as a premier investment destination and a vital bridge between the UK and the African continent, realizing the full benefits of this robust investor confidence.
