Kenya: Health Ministry and Education Ministry Join Force to Adjust Health Training to National Needs

The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education have formed a joint task force to align existing health training programmes with national priorities. This follows a high-level strategic meeting chaired by Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale and attended by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba.

The task force will review current training programmes against national health needs, propose urgent reforms, and design a detailed implementation roadmap with defined milestones to strengthen the country’s health workforce.

This collaboration aims to ensure that Kenya’s health training systems equip learners with the skills necessary to deliver on the constitutional right to the highest attainable standard of health under Article 43(1)(a). It represents a major step toward matching training outputs with the nation’s healthcare demands.

The meeting also reviewed health sector reforms underway through the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda, including the Digital Superhighway initiative, which seeks to integrate services nationwide, improve delivery, and curb the challenge of unqualified practitioners.

Participants emphasised that human resources remain the backbone of health sector expansion and a shared responsibility of both ministries. They discussed sustainable strategies to help training institutions develop and implement programmes that address Kenya’s disease burden and service priorities.

Both ministries reaffirmed their commitment to competency-based, harmonised, and responsive health training designed to strengthen the link between education systems and population health needs—an essential pillar for realising the constitutional right to health for all Kenyans.

This initiative aligns with the Government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which prioritises equitable healthcare delivery and the accelerated implementation of Universal Health Coverage nationwide.

The meeting was also attended by Principal Secretaries Mary Muthoni (Public Health and Professional Standards) and Beatrice Muganda (Higher Education and Research), Director-General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, and technical leaders from both ministries.
