Ghana’s Cedi: From Crisis to Global Currency Champion

In one of the most dramatic economic turnarounds in recent memory, Ghana’s cedi has emerged as the world’s strongest-performing currency in 2025, appreciating nearly 50% against the US dollar since January. This remarkable achievement marks a stunning reversal for a currency that was considered the world’s worst performer just three years ago.
A Currency Reborn
Beginning the year at around ₵15 to the dollar, the cedi has climbed steadily to trade just above the ₵10 mark, outperforming every other global currency. This recovery is particularly striking when you consider that in 2022, the cedi lost over 55% of its value during a severe economic crisis.
The Drivers of Success
Several key factors have fueled this extraordinary comeback. Ghana’s position as a major gold producer has proven invaluable, with export revenues surging alongside record gold prices. The government’s comprehensive debt restructuring, combined with support from a $3 billion IMF program, has restored international confidence in Ghana’s economic management.
The Bank of Ghana has also played a crucial role through aggressive monetary policy, including raising interest rates to 28% to combat inflation. By transitioning to transparent spot-market forex auctions, the central bank has improved dollar liquidity and reduced speculative trading that previously destabilized the market.
Looking Ahead
Despite these impressive gains, policymakers remain cautiously optimistic. Inflation, while declining, still sits above the central bank’s target range, and economists warn that premature policy easing could threaten the cedi’s newfound stability. The challenge now is maintaining currency strength while ensuring Ghana’s exports remain competitive in global markets.
The cedi’s journey from crisis to champion demonstrates that with sound economic policies, structural reforms, and a bit of luck from commodity markets, even the most troubled currencies can stage remarkable comebacks. As 2025 draws to a close, Ghana’s currency stands as a testament to economic resilience and the power of decisive policy action.
