Gabon Positions Itself as Africa’s Premier Oil and Gas Investment Hotspot

A Strategic Return to the Global Stage

Gabon is rapidly transforming into one of Africa’s most attractive upstream destinations. Minister of Petroleum and Gas, Clotaire Kondja, is set to showcase the nation’s investment roadmap at the Invest in African Energy (IAE) Forum in Paris on April 22–23, 2026.

The administration’s “open-door” policy has already attracted global supermajors, signaling a new era of exploration for the Central African nation.

Major Milestones: Re-entry and Exploration

The Gabonese energy sector has seen a surge in international activity over the last six months, specifically targeting frontier deepwater acreage:

  • ExxonMobil & bp: In October 2025, both companies signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to evaluate deepwater and ultra-deepwater blocks. This marks a significant re-entry into the region for these industry leaders.
  • 2026 Offshore Licensing Rounds: The government has announced new licensing rounds for 2026, opening up roughly 70% of Gabon’s offshore territory to new exploration bids.
  • Assala Energy Success: In March 2026, Assala announced a discovery at the Magoga-A well, encountering 8 meters of pay in the Gamba Sandstone formation.
  • ReconAfrica: The company is currently reprocessing 3D seismic data over the Ngulu block, aiming to reach “drill-ready” status for its 28 identified prospects by the end of 2026.

Accelerating Production: The VAALCO Campaign

While exploration looks toward the future, current production is seeing an immediate boost. VAALCO Energy launched its “Phase Three” drilling campaign at the Etame Marin block in late 2025.

  • First Oil: The first development well of this phase came online in January 2026.
  • Output Targets: The program aims for a gross output of 20,000–23,000 barrels per day.
  • Long-term Vision: This campaign supports VAALCO’s ambitious goal of achieving 225% organic production growth by 2030.

Why Investors are Choosing Gabon

Gabon offers a unique “plug-and-play” environment for energy investors compared to other frontier markets:

  1. Established Infrastructure: Existing pipelines, platforms, and Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) units significantly lower the initial capital required for new developments.
  2. Diverse Opportunities: Investors can choose between high-reward frontier deepwater blocks or lower-risk near-field exploration.
  3. Active Diplomacy: Minister Kondja recently engaged with U.S. officials and investors in Washington, reinforcing the government’s commitment to transparency and international capital markets.

The IAE 2026 Forum

The Invest in African Energy Forum in Paris serves as the primary gateway for deal-making in the Gabonese sector. It provides a specialized platform for project developers and policymakers to connect with global capital, setting the stage for the broader African Energy Week later this year.
