Egypt’s Industrial Sector Boosted by Vantage Capital’s Landmark $45 Million Investment in MIDO

In one of the largest mezzanine debt transactions in Egypt’s corporate history, Africa’s premier mezzanine fund manager, Vantage Capital, has injected $45 million into the International Group for Modern Coatings (MIDO). The massive financing package is structured to fuel working capital and refinance existing obligations, allowing the prominent Egyptian industrial manufacturer to unlock significant dormant production capacity.

Unlocking Industrial Firepower in Alexandria

Founded in 1979 by Dr. Aly Ghaly, MIDO has evolved from a local manufacturing operation into a dominant pan-African industrial powerhouse. Operating out of two sprawling, vertically integrated plants in Alexandria that span over 47,100 square meters, the company boasts a massive annual production output exceeding 100,000 tonnes.

The chemical manufacturer produces a highly diversified catalog of over 1,200 products. Its specialized inventory covers high-performance automotive refinish paints, wood coatings, adhesives, and unsaturated polyester resins.

A core competitive advantage for MIDO is its completely self-reliant manufacturing ecosystem. The Alexandria facilities host proprietary in-house resin production lines and advanced tin can packaging capabilities. By controlling its own packaging and chemical backbones internally, the company successfully eliminates supplier markups, tightens delivery timelines, and maintains absolute quality control across its regional and global supply chains.

Driving Export Growth and Import Substitution

Ranking securely among Egypt’s top three specialty coatings players, MIDO currently exports its advanced technical products to more than 50 countries. While the broader African continent remains its primary target market, the enterprise maintains an active market footprint across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Europe, Asia, and the United States. The brand’s global engineering credentials have also secured lucrative private-label and co-manufacturing agreements with top-tier international paint giants like Nippon Paints and Kansai Paints.

The new capital injection directly addresses Egypt’s broader strategic economic goals. By maximizing production efficiency and substituting costly imported specialty coatings with high-quality, local alternatives, the transaction aggressively strengthens Egypt’s industrial self-reliance. Furthermore, scaling up export volumes will directly generate essential foreign currency inflows for the country.

Following the closing of the deal, MIDO’s established leadership structure remains completely unchanged. Founder Dr. Aly Ghaly will continue to guide the board as Chairman, while Ramy Galal remains Chief Executive Officer to steer the company through its next aggressive phase of international expansion and product research.
