Challenge One: Tunisia’s Historic Leap Into Space

On March 22, 2021, Tunisia made history by launching Challenge One, the country’s first domestically manufactured satellite. This achievement marked a pivotal moment not just for Tunisia, but for the entire Maghreb region, positioning the North African nation as a rising player in the continental space industry.

A Maghreb First, An African Milestone

Challenge One made Tunisia the sixth African country and the first in the Maghreb to manufacture its own satellite. The satellite lifted off aboard a Russian Soyuz-2 rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, carrying with it the hopes and ambitions of a nation eager to demonstrate its technological capabilities on the world stage.

The timing of the launch held special significance—it was intentionally scheduled near Tunisia’s Independence Day on March 20, symbolizing a new era of technological sovereignty for the nation. President Kais Saied joined the TELNET engineers at their headquarters in Tunis to witness the historic moment, declaring that “This event reflects the aspiration of Tunisia and young Tunisians to exceed the limits of the earth.”

Built by Tunisian Ingenuity

What sets Challenge One apart is that it was entirely designed and built by Tunisian engineers. The satellite was created using 100% Tunisian resources and skills, thanks to new technology developed in Tunisia. The team behind this achievement consisted primarily of young telecommunications engineers from TELNET, most between 25 and 30 years old, who had studied in Tunisia.

The project represented years of intensive work. Haifa Triki, a 28-year-old engineer on the team, captured the team’s dedication when she reflected on the accomplishment, noting the challenge of learning new technologies and the sacrifices made, concluding simply: “it was worth it.”

Revolutionary Internet of Things Technology

Challenge One specializes in Internet of Things technology and is the first satellite to use the LoRaWAN protocol for communications, making it easier to be individually programmed, controlled, or reset in space from Telnet labs. This groundbreaking approach gives the satellite unprecedented flexibility in its operations.

The satellite travels at 7.5 kilometers per second in low Earth orbit at an altitude of 550 kilometers, completing one orbit around Earth every 90 minutes. Its capabilities include collecting data such as temperature, pollution, and humidity readings from areas without internet coverage—filling crucial gaps in terrestrial phone networks.

The practical applications are diverse and impactful. Challenge One can remotely activate solar pumps in the Sahara Desert, track livestock movements across Tunisia’s borders with Algeria and Libya, monitor agricultural conditions, and support connected vehicle systems. These capabilities address real challenges facing North African nations, from resource management to border security.

Part of a Larger Vision

Challenge One is just the beginning. The satellite is intended to be the first of a constellation of 30 satellites that TELNET plans to deploy over the coming years. This ambitious plan reflects the company’s vision of establishing Tunisia as a regional hub for satellite technology and Internet of Things services.

The project also exemplifies successful international cooperation. Tunisia partnered with Russian companies SPUTNIX and GK Launch Services, creating what TELNET described as a gateway between Russia and Tunisia around space nanosatellites and IoT technology. However, the intellectual property and technical expertise remain firmly Tunisian.

Context in Africa’s Growing Space Race

While Challenge One represents a first for Tunisia and the Maghreb, it’s important to note that Africa’s journey into space began decades earlier. The first African-owned satellite, NileSat 101, was launched by Egypt in 1998, and South Africa launched SUNSAT, the continent’s first domestically developed satellite, in 1999.

Since then, the African space sector has flourished. Today, more than a dozen African countries have launched satellites, with South Africa leading in total numbers, followed by Egypt, Algeria, and Nigeria. The continent is witnessing rapid growth in space capabilities, driven largely by the decreasing costs of small satellite technology.

Tunisia’s achievement is particularly notable because it represents the democratization of space technology. While earlier African satellites often relied heavily on foreign partnerships for construction, Challenge One demonstrates that even smaller nations can develop sophisticated space technology domestically with the right investments in education and innovation.

Inspiring a Generation

Beyond its technical achievements, Challenge One serves a deeper purpose: inspiring Tunisia’s youth and stemming the brain drain that has seen thousands of engineers leave the country each year for opportunities abroad. TELNET CEO Mohamed Frikha emphasized this aspect, stating that countries are valued by democracy and technology, and that the project would give Tunisians confidence that they can become leaders in technology.

The satellite project was supported by Tunisian expatriate engineers, demonstrating how diaspora expertise can contribute to national development. It also creates tangible employment opportunities in Tunisia’s emerging aerospace sector, offering compelling reasons for talented engineers to build their careers at home.

President Saied underscored this sentiment, noting that Tunisia’s real wealth is its young generation, capable of overcoming obstacles. In a country that has faced significant economic and political challenges since the 2011 revolution, Challenge One represents hope and possibility—a demonstration that Tunisia can compete on the global technological stage.

The successful launch and operation of Challenge One has established Tunisia as a serious player in the African space industry. As TELNET moves forward with plans for its satellite constellation, the nation is positioning itself to offer innovative IoT services throughout the region.

The project exemplifies how middle-income countries can leverage their human capital and strategic partnerships to achieve technological milestones once thought to be the exclusive domain of wealthy nations. For Tunisia, Challenge One is more than a satellite—it’s a symbol of what the country’s engineers can achieve and a beacon for future innovation.
