UN Allocates $3 Million to Bolster Ebola Preparedness in Central African Republic

Central African Republic is confronting a sprawling humanitarian crisis, where ongoing conflict, severe flooding, recurring disease outbreaks and regional instability have left more than 2.3 million people — over a third of the population — dependent on urgent assistance.
Within this precarious context, the United Nations’ Emergency Relief Coordinator, Fletcher, has announced the rapid disbursement of $3 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to accelerate Ebola preparedness across the country.
The alarm was raised after confirmed Ebola cases were reported in several provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo that share borders with the Central African Republic, heightening the likelihood of cross‑border transmission.
The allocated resources are earmarked for bolstering disease surveillance, expanding isolation facilities, intensifying community‑based education campaigns, and ensuring reliable access to clean water in at‑risk areas.
This year’s humanitarian appeal for the Central African Republic totals $264 million, yet only slightly more than 42 percent of the target has been met, with $112 million received to date, underscoring a persistent funding shortfall.
Fletcher’s swift financial injection is a vital step toward curbing a potential outbreak, but it also highlights the broader challenges of delivering aid in a nation where health infrastructure is fragile and humanitarian needs remain acute.
