Bassirou Diomaye Faye Leads Senegal’s Major Reforms

The Senegalese President Multiplies Initiatives for Sustainable Economic and Social Transformation

DAKAR, October 16, 2025 – Since his inauguration in April 2024, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has emerged as one of the rising figures in African politics. At 44 years old, the youngest president in Senegal’s history is multiplying initiatives to profoundly transform his country, with results that are beginning to show.

A Busy Agenda This Mid-October

President Faye’s week perfectly illustrates his sustained work pace. On Wednesday, October 15, he chaired the weekly Council of Ministers meeting where several major issues were addressed: the consolidation of social dialogue, the acceleration of housing programs, and the definition of a new financial doctrine to support the country’s economic sovereignty.

On Thursday, October 16, the Head of State was scheduled to preside over the opening of the first National Forum on Books and Reading, an initiative aimed at promoting literary production and valorizing national languages. That same day, he was also expected to receive a historic White Paper on the 1944 Thiaroye massacre, the result of several months of research conducted by Senegalese scholars on this colonial tragedy that continues to haunt the national memory.

Active African Diplomacy

President Faye’s international agenda reflects his commitment to strengthening inter-African relations. Starting October 17, he begins a working visit to Rwanda, followed by an official mission to Kenya from October 19 to 21, 2025. These trips are part of his vision for a more integrated and united Africa.

Encouraging Economic Results

During the latest Council of Ministers meeting, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko praised a remarkable economic performance: the Public Savings Call (APE) raised 450 billion CFA francs, 150 billion above the initial target. This success illustrates the renewed confidence of investors and the diaspora in the new regime’s financial governance.

Sports as a Vector for National Unity

President Faye doesn’t hesitate to show his support for national teams. On Tuesday, October 14, he went to the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio to encourage the Lions of Teranga during the decisive match against Mauritania. His presence bore fruit: the national team qualified for the 2026 World Cup, its third consecutive World Cup participation after 2018 and 2022.

In the Council of Ministers’ communiqué, the president warmly congratulated the players and technical staff, asking the government to “take all necessary measures to ensure proper preparation and remarkable participation of the Football Lions in the upcoming African Cup of Nations as well as the World Cup.”

Social Priorities at the Heart of Action

Among the president’s priority issues is housing. He reaffirmed that access to decent housing remains “a major concern for compatriots,” instructing his Prime Minister to accelerate the implementation of construction programs throughout the territory, with particular attention to regions and university centers.

Social dialogue also constitutes a pillar of his governance. Bassirou Diomaye Faye requested a forward-looking evaluation of the High Council for Social Dialogue (HCDS) and the proposal of a new mechanism before the end of December 2025. A Social Conference on “workplace productivity” is also announced.

Reforms Across All Sectors

In agriculture, the president congratulated the government on the results of the agricultural campaign while insisting on strengthening the Community Agricultural Domains Program and reconstituting seed capital. He also made a vibrant appeal for the promotion of “Made in Senegal” as part of October’s “Buy Local” month.

In healthcare, Bassirou Diomaye Faye emphasized the importance of the fight against breast cancer, asking the government to intensify prevention actions and improve patient care.

A President with an Atypical Profile

A former tax inspector, Bassirou Diomaye Faye embodies a new generation of African leaders. His election in March 2024, just days after his release from prison where he had been detained for political reasons, marked a turning point in Senegalese political history.

With his governance style favoring dialogue, transparency, and national sovereignty, President Faye is asserting himself as an essential figure in the African political landscape. His ambition: to make Senegal a model of sustainable and inclusive development on the continent.

The 2026 World Cup will take place from June 11 to July 19 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This will be Senegal’s fourth participation in a World Cup final phase, after 2002, 2018, and 2022.
