African Union Chairperson Emphasizes Critical Role of Knowledge Management in Continental Development

Institutional visit highlights knowledge as key accelerator for Agenda 2063 implementation
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission conducted a strategic visit to the Knowledge Management Unit within the Directorate of Information and Communication on March 27, emphasizing the fundamental importance of institutional memory and knowledge preservation in advancing Africa’s development framework, Agenda 2063.
Guided tour showcases Union’s intellectual heritage
During the comprehensive visit, the Chairperson received detailed guidance through the Union’s archives and library from Head of Communication Mrs. Wynne Musabayana, who serves as acting Director of Information and Communication, and Head of the Knowledge Management Unit Mr. Asmerom Girma. The Chairperson was accompanied by his spokesperson Mr. Nuur Mohamud Sheekh and other senior officials.
The tour provided an in-depth examination of how the African Union preserves and manages its vast intellectual and historical assets, demonstrating the systematic approaches employed to maintain institutional continuity across leadership transitions and policy cycles.
Institutional memory essential for organizational sustainability
The Chairperson delivered powerful remarks on the strategic importance of knowledge preservation for organizational effectiveness. “We need institutional memory. An organisation without a memory cannot sustain the responsibility of having a history, and of preparing itself for coming generations,” he declared, connecting knowledge management to long-term institutional sustainability.
This perspective positions knowledge management not merely as administrative function but as fundamental infrastructure necessary for effective governance and policy continuity across the continent.
Resource allocation critical for knowledge systems
Addressing resource challenges, the Chairperson emphasized the necessity of adequate support for knowledge management operations. “It is very important that we give the necessary attention and support—logistic and human resources—to this Directorate,” he stated, highlighting how knowledge systems require sustained investment to function effectively.
The Chairperson congratulated the team for maintaining Union archives “in the best form and shape possible, despite the lack of resources, human and financial,” while emphasizing that “the archives, the library, and the Directorate of Information and Communication as a whole, are the memory of this institution.”
Strategic positioning within Agenda 2063 framework
The visit reinforced the African Union Commission’s core value of information and knowledge sharing while highlighting the strategic positioning of knowledge within the Union’s 2024-2028 Strategic Plan. This framework recognizes knowledge as an accelerator for Agenda 2063 implementation, with information serving as a vital enabler of continental development processes.
The Knowledge Management Unit plays a central role in collecting, preserving, and disseminating the African Union’s intellectual and historical assets, supporting both internal decision-making processes and broader continental development efforts.
Comprehensive access supports diverse stakeholder needs
The AU’s knowledge resources, available in both physical formats through archives and library facilities and digitally via online platforms, provide significant value to multiple user categories. AU staff members rely on accurate records and institutional memory for effective policy design and implementation, while member states utilize these resources for institutional guidance in decision-making processes.
African researchers and academics access primary documents and data to inform scholarship and innovation, while students and the general public benefit from open access to information. Content creators utilize these resources to develop Africa-focused content that accurately reflects continental perspectives and experiences.
Transparency and development commitment reinforced
By ensuring comprehensive access to knowledge resources, the African Union reinforces its commitment to transparency, learning, and development while working toward achieving Agenda 2063 aspirations. This approach recognizes that effective development requires not only current initiatives but also deep understanding of historical context and institutional learning.
Renewed focus on knowledge systems strengthening
The Chairperson’s visit signals renewed institutional commitment to strengthening knowledge systems within the African Union, ensuring that the continent’s historical experiences inform present decision-making while actively shaping future development trajectories.
This strategic emphasis on knowledge management reflects understanding that sustainable continental development requires robust institutional memory, systematic knowledge preservation, and effective information sharing mechanisms that support evidence-based policy making across member states.
