Botswana (Q2 2026): A Landmark Energy Transition, Diplomatic Push, and Space Ambitions

Energy and Economic Sovereignty
On April 16, Botswana reached a historic milestone in its energy transition, breaking ground on the 500 MW Maun solar power plant. The national flagship project aims to sharply cut the country’s reliance on imported electricity and coal while giving a boost to the green economy.
In line with the coalition government’s broader economic direction, Minister Mohwasa urged business leaders in late May to put a definitive end to exporting unprocessed raw materials, stressing the need to build local value chains and manufacturing to tackle structural unemployment.
Diplomacy and Regional Cooperation
It was an unusually active quarter on the international front for President Duma Boko. In April, Botswana deepened defense, energy, and conservation ties with Angola, followed by the fifth session of its bi-national commission with Zimbabwe. May brought six major strategic agreements with Rwanda signed on the 6th—covering mutual visa abolition, double-taxation avoidance, and air services—and, later that month, a visit from South African President Cyril Ramaphosa for the sixth session of their own bi-national commission.
On May 29, the Ministry of Minerals and Energy announced that Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, president of the African Development Bank, would head the new Diamonds for Development Fund, a strategic vehicle designed to maximize the social returns from the country’s diamond wealth.
Innovation, Technology, and Space
On June 25, Botswana became the 68th signatory to the NASA-led Artemis Accords governing civil lunar exploration—a move that opens fresh doors for technology investment and scientific partnerships in the country’s research and aerospace sectors.
Health and Public Safety
Following Ebola alerts in the wider region (DRC/Uganda), the Ministry of Health introduced enhanced screening protocols at all points of entry on May 28.
In short: Botswana accelerated its transformation this quarter. By pairing a concrete pivot to renewables (the Maun project) with an assertive regional integration push and a stake in future-facing technology (the Artemis Accords), the country is actively laying the groundwork for its post-diamond era.
